What is Camp L.E.A.D?
Camp L.E.A.D is a 5-day, outdoor-based day camp where kids ages 8–11 develop confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper connection to nature. Each day is built around hands-on learning, creative thinking, and group exploration and STEM through the L.E.A.D. pillars: Learn, Explore, Adventure, Discover.
Where is the camp located?
Camp is held at NCOAE’s campus at 9809 River Road, Wilmington, NC, a 17-acre site with local trails, water access, and adventure zones near the Cape Fear region.
What are the dates for Camp L.E.A.D?
Campers have the option to choose between two separate weeks in August:
Week I: August 4-8, 2025
Week II: August 11-15, 2025
What are the camp hours?
Camp runs Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. On the final day, camp ends slightly earlier at 3:00 PM, following a family celebration and awards ceremony.
What does a typical day look like?
Each day follows a unique theme, such as Team Building, Outdoor Skills, Adventure, Environmental Discovery, and Celebration & Reflection. Activities range from science explorations, STEM projects, and shelter building to nature hikes, eco-art, water games, canoeing, team building and treasure hunts.
What should my child bring each day?
Campers should bring:
- Closed-toe shoes
- Swimsuit
- Towel
- Sunscreen
- Bug spray
- Hat
- Sneakers
- Water shoes
- Change of clothes
Is food provided?
Yes. NCOAE will provide lunch and two daily snacks are provided by NCOAE. We can also accommodate food allergies and/or dietary restrictions.
Who supervises the campers?
Camp is led by trained NCOAE outdoor educators/instructors who specialize in youth development and adventure-based learning. Staff are background-checked and certified in first aid and risk management.
How are the campers grouped?
Campers are grouped by age and team names. On Day 1, each team creates a group flag and camp values to encourage ownership and unity throughout the week. There will be 6-8 campers in each group.
Will camp be canceled due to bad weather?
No. Camp LEAD runs rain or shine. On stormy days, outdoor activities may be replaced with exciting indoor options like a visit to the rock climbing gym, Fort Fisher Aquarium, Wilmington Museum, or a local escape room.
Is there a performance or celebration at the end?
Yes! On Day 5, families are invited to a camper-led showcase where kids share skits, songs, or stories. The day ends with awards, songs, and a fun send-off.
