The NCOAE High School Semester offers an immersive, field-based academic experience where learning comes alive in real-world environments. Whether students are studying the biodiversity of cloud forests in Ecuador, conducting sagebrush steppe biodiversity surveys in Oregon, or assessing mountain stream health and water quality in North Carolina, they earn Honors-level science credit while developing leadership skills, independence, and a deeper understanding of the natural world—alongside peers, adventure, and meaningful hands-on learning.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect to learn on my high school semester?
This program offers a mix of academic and outdoor leadership experiences. You will earn credits in Honors Natural Science, Outdoor Leadership, and Spanish (Ecuador only). You will also have the opportunity to gain certifications in Wilderness Medicine, Outdoor Leadership, and Leave No Trace (LNT). Students will also learn essential outdoor skills.
Do I need to buy any special clothes or equipment?
Yes. NCOAE provides all necessary group gear and food, but you will want, or be required, to bring certain items for yourself. We encourage you to contact NCOAE with all of your gear questions as early as possible. Start planning now by viewing the course pack list.
What grade do I have to be in to enroll in an NCOAE High School Semester program?
The NCOAE High School Summer Semester is for rising ad current 10th and 11th graders.
How long are the High School Semester programs?
NCOAE High School Summer Semesters are 32 days during the summer months (June-August).
