The NCOAE Gap Semester offers one of the most dynamic gap experiences available—combining extended domestic expeditions with international travel and cultural immersion. Students paddle rivers traveled by Lewis and Clark, progress through diverse ecosystems in the American West and Southeast, and culminate their journey deep in Ecuador, including experiences connected to the Amazon River basin.

Throughout the semester, students develop practical leadership theory and skills, learn effective risk management, and engage deeply with environmental ethics and stewardship—all while living, learning, and traveling as part of a close-knit cohort.
