About the Intensive Self-Paced EMT Certification Course

Our team designed this 240-hour self-paced EMT training course to be comprehensive, practical, and efficient. The curriculum is divided into two phases:

  • Phase 1: Seven (7) weeks of self-paced, online training to prepare you for our intense 11-day practical.
  • Phase 2: 11 consecutive days of in-person hands-on skills training culminating in comprehensive testing.

Here’s what you need to know about each phase:

Phase 1 of the Intensive Self-paced EMT Certification Course

Phase 1 is an extremely intense self-paced course conducted entirely online with NCOAE faculty over the course of seven (7) weeks. It includes a combination of the following:

  • Pre-recorded lectures that can be watched and reviewed at any time.
  • Live, interactive lectures and check-ins (attendance required), at the beginning and/or end of each week to reinforce learning and provide you with the opportunity to ask questions, review key content, prepare for upcoming quizzes and exams, and receive personalized support from instructors. These classroom hours are essential for your success and will help you stay connected with your instructor and peers throughout Phase 1 of the course.
  • Self-paced assignments, including readings.
  • Quizzes and proctored exams.

This structure is designed to provide flexibility while ensuring you receive the support you need to succeed in your EMT training. Students must be self-motivated and dedicated to completing this self-paced course and meeting all deadlines and benchmarks. Rest assured, we are here to guide you every step of the way.

Phase 2 of the Intensive Self-Paced EMT Certification Course

During Phase 2 — the 11-day hands-on phase — students gain essential clinical/field experience at our campus in Tygh Valley, Oregon, and Wilmington, North Carolina. Practical skills sessions are broken down as follows:

  • Practical Skills Training Days 1-5: In-person, hands-on skills training. You’ll apply everything you learned online and put it all together, learning to assess and treat a variety of medical emergencies.
  • Practical Skills Training Days 6-8: Clinical and field experience. Students complete up to 16 hours of clinical time in the area emergency departments and onboard EMS ambulances, applying their skills in real life under the guidance of trained preceptors.
  • Practical Skills Training Days 9-10: Psychomotor skills review and testing. NREMT and Oregon EMS education standards require that students undergo and pass psychomotor testing and hands on skills evaluation. You’ll demonstrate what you’ve learned by completing full scenarios involving assessment, treatment, and transport of a patient undergoing a medical emergency.
  • Day 11: Graduation. Certificates, pictures, hugs, and high-fives!

Note: The Intensive Self-Paced EMT Certification Course is not suitable for everyone. It utilizes a unique learning model that requires exceptional time management, self-direction, and motivation. To succeed, you must be able to digest and comprehend basic EMS content and information. If you’re ready to take on the challenge, this course is for you. Otherwise, it may not be the best fit and you should check out either our Hybrid or Standard 21-Day EMT training.
